Actor Desmond Llewelyn
died at the age of 85 in a car crash on sunday, december
19, 1999. He played Major Boothroyd alias "Q"
in 17 Bond adventures including "The World Is Not
Enough" which is currently in the cinemas. Llewelyn got this role because Peter Burton who played "Q" in the first Bond adventure "Dr. No" had no time to play him in the second 007 film "From Russia With Love". After his first appearance Desmond Llewelyn played the role in all following Bond films except of "Live And Let Die" in which "Q" did not appear. While the other characters in the Bond films like Bond, "M", Miss Moneypenny and Felix Leiter stayed approximately at the same age - the actors playing them changed several times -, "Q" is the only character in the 007 series who got older. "Q" brought a lot of humor in the films with the demonstration of technical gadgets. In "The World Is Not Enough" he got an assistent called "R" who was played by John Cleese (of Monty Python). Cleese is supposed to continue the traditional role of the gadged man in the future 007 films. The Bond fans will miss Desmond Llewelyn. |
